Tom Shand is a forty-six-year veteran of the fire service having started his career with the College Park Fire Department in 1970 while studying Fire Protection Engineering at the University of Maryland. Tom is a contributing editor to both Firehouse Magazine and Fire Apparatus Journal and has previously written books covering the history of Hahn Motors, Young Fire Equipment and the Syracuse, New York Fire Department.

Bill has been involved with the Volunteer Fire Service since 1976. During those years he has held many positions including firefighter, engineer, lieutenant, captain, and for the past 8 years serving as the Assistant Fire Chief with the Metal Township Fire and Ambulance Company in Franklin County Pennsylvania. Bill has been a Pennsylvania Fire Service Instructor since 2010, teaching for Bucks County Community College, Harrisburg Area Community College and as an adjunct instructor for the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy. Bill is currently one of the instructors utilized by Bucks Community College for Department of Defense fire service training, providing training both in the continental US and internationally. In his professional life, Bill spent 36 years as a professional over-the-road truck driver. Bill has logged more than 6 million miles, earning numerous safety awards, including the prestigious 5-million-mile safety award given after 5 million miles without a preventable accident.
