Passing of CVVFA Life Member and Assistant Chaplain Jim Wharry

The CVVFA regrets to announce the passing of CVVFA Life Memmber Jim Wharry.

Jim Wharry, Life Member of the Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Co. of Newark DE died following a
long illness. Jim joined Aetna following his father who served as Ambulance Captain and his
mother who was an auxiliary member.

Jim was an active responder in his younger days as a firefighter and an ambulance attendant on
Aetna’s Cadillacs. His wife Diane is a member of the auxiliary.

Jim held many administrative offices in a number of fire service organizations. His skills included
the ability to record minutes and organize documents. He served as Secretary at Aetna in the
1970’s. He held the office of Secretary in the New Castle County Volunteer Firefighters
Association and DVFA for a period of time. Jim also had skills in arranging flowers and designed
displays for Aetna apparatus in parades. He was an expert in calligraphy and was often called
upon to design invitations for fire service events.

Jim was a Life Member of the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firefighters Association where he
also served as Secretary and was the Assistant Chaplain at the time of his death. He tediously
maintained the honor role of deceased members and participated in the annual memorial
service.
